A state-owned energy company called China Energy Investment Corporation has declared that the world's first offshore platform for the combined production of green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol has been completed in Yantai, China.
Impressively, the platform, invented in collaboration with CIMC Raffles and Guoneng Hydrogen Innovation Technology (Beijing), is now ready to begin trial operations, marking a watershed moment in clean fuel production for ocean-going ships.
China's Innovation in Offshore Hydrogen
China is demonstrating offshore hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and use throughout the whole industrial chain for the first time with this project. The semi-submersible platform, which is more than 50 metres high and weighs more than 20,000 tonnes, can operate independently thanks to its electrochemical energy storage and photovoltaic power generation systems.
According to a representative for China Energy, “Its completion marks a significant milestone in establishing technical
specifications and standards for China's offshore hydrogen production sector, addressing previously unmet regulatory and operational frameworks.”
In addition, utilising freshwater and direct seawater electrolysis systems, the platform has three hydrogen production units. Every day, a desalination module generates five tonnes of freshwater to aid in the production of hydrogen.
The storage and transportation issues are then resolved by converting the hydrogen into methanol and ammonia. These goods support sustainable industrial and maritime applications by acting as vital industrial raw materials and clean marine fuels.

Meeting Fuel Demand in Industry & Maritime
In January 2025, the platform passed the China Classification Society's design compliance review after construction got underway in September 2024. The project creates a scalable model for offshore clean energy production by showcasing cutting-edge technology and industry leaders working together.
A representative for CIMC Raffles stated, “This platform demonstrates our commitment to pioneering sustainable energy solutions that meet global demands for clean fuels.”
Furthermore, offering a flexible solution for industrial applications and maritime fuel needs, the initiative supports the development of green energy technologies. The platform establishes a standard for upcoming offshore hydrogen projects by combining revolutionary manufacturing methods with
renewable energy sources.
“The successful development of this facility positions China as a leader in offshore clean energy innovation,” stated a representative of Guoneng Hydrogen Innovation Technology.
In a nutshell, as the platform goes into trial operations, it should yield useful information to improve operational procedures and technical standards. By promoting developments in clean fuel production and supporting international environmental goals, this project demonstrates China's commitment to sustainable energy development.
