Drydocks World Secures Contract to Construct the Largest FLNG Installation in the World

8/29/2025, 10:43:25 AM

The contract to construct the largest FLNG project in the world has been given to Drydocks World, DP World's shipyard branch.

Despite having a great deal of expertise with FSRUs and LNG tankers, this will be the company's first time building an FLNG, one of the most complicated kinds of offshore installations.

Amigo LNG, a joint venture between Epcilon LNG, a Texas-based energy company, and its transition energy subsidiary, LNG Alliance Pte Ltd, a Singapore-based company, was given the contract.

Partnership with Drydocks World: A Recipe for Success

The Amigo LNG offshore development includes two 2.1 mtpa FLNGs as well as two FSUs for product offloading and storage. The combined capacity of the offshore facility will be 4.2 mtpa, which is a modest yet very significant amount.

Moreover, the gas to be liquefied will originate in America, although the installation site is situated in the protected Gulf of California, off the coast of Guaymas, Sonora.

Gas from the Permian may be exported to Asian markets from this location without having to travel via the Panama Canal, which would otherwise require time and money for LNG plants

on the Gulf Coast of the United States.

Notably, CEO of the LNG Alliance, Dr. Muthu Chezhian, remarked: “By partnering with Drydocks World on the world's largest FLNG facility, we are securing best-in-class quality, exceptional production capacity, and reliable long-term performance of this critical asset. We are also leveraging the key advantages of FLNG solutions—from faster project schedules to rigorous testing and seamless pre-commissioning in a controlled fabrication yard environment.”

Growth Strategy for Amigo LNG

Instead of constructing an offshore facility, Amigo LNG's previously released growth plan envisaged the construction of an onshore 7.8 mtpa terminal in the port of Guaymas.

On Monday, LNG Alliance and Macquarie inked a long-term sale and purchase deal that covers 0.6 mtpa of the facility's production for the first 15 years of operation.

According to Amigo LNG, it plans to start its first liquefaction train for that contract in the second half of 2028, which coincides with the completion of Drydocks World's FLNG commissioning.

Maritime Engineering Courses explore Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) installation, with a multidisciplinary background that includes marine engineering, cryogenic technologies, and safety management. The field combines complex onshore liquefaction plants with a tiny floating vessel, adding the obstacles of mobility, space limits, and a hostile offshore environment.
