In Dammam, Saudi Arabia, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has established a maritime technology hub.
The centre will concentrate on the study, creation, and use of robotics, artificial intelligence, smart systems, and digital technologies that are pertinent to the maritime industry.
Launched at the Saudi Maritime Logistics Congress, the ABS Technology Centre seeks to provide technical solutions for shipping's operational and regulatory problems.
The centre aims to facilitate collaboration among manufacturers, shipyards, regulatory agencies, and vessel operators on cooperative development projects.
Through the centre, ABS said it planned to work with Saudi universities to offer training options for students interested in professions in the marine sector.
Patrick Ryan, ABS senior vice president and chief technology officer, stated, “We are witnessing unprecedented technology innovation in our industry, and this centre will help ensure the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is at the cutting edge of maritime research and talent development.”
The Transport General Authority (TGA) of Saudi Arabia has been instrumental in the establishment of the centre.
In accordance with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) standards and the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) Convention, TGA is in charge of accrediting training providers, upholding regulatory oversight, and assisting with workforce development.
According to ABS, the goal of these initiatives is to guarantee that the nation's marine industry runs at acknowledged standards for safety, compliance, and talent development.
The launch of the ABS Technology Centre in Dammam, according to TGA maritime environment and safety general manager Yousef Al Dossary, “reflects the Kingdom's vision to embrace innovation, strengthen safety, and develop future generations of Saudi maritime professionals.”
Furthermore, the opening of the centre is in line with Saudi Vision 2030's aims.
The agreement between Saronic Technology and ABS to develop autonomous maritime technology was announced in August of this year.
Overall, to work together on initiatives aimed at enhancing the technical specifications for autonomous surface vessels (ASVs) and classification services for Saronic's autonomous capabilities, the parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
