Arsenio Dominguez, the secretary-general of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), has highlighted important topics for the organisation's next agenda.
In a video message, Secretary-General Dominguez emphasised the importance of implementation in 2026 at IMO, urging a shift from plans to concrete actions and measurable progress, encapsulated by the maritime theme: “From Policy to Practice – Powering Maritime Excellence.”
Dominguez stated that nearly two million seafarers work at sea and that there will be a significant update to the STCW Convention to address new industry realities, including advancements in technology, new fuels, and evolving requirements.

“On decarbonisation, we are moving ahead with efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions from the sector by or around 2050. Stay tuned for further developments.
“When it comes to technology, all eyes will be on the finalisation of the autonomous ships code.
“And of course, IMO will continue supporting the implementation of the High Seas Treaty as it enters into force this month, underlying our global commitment to protect the ocean and biodiversity.
“I wish you all a successful 2026 and do not forget to check out our new logo!”
At the Maritime Professional Training, delegates study how IMO prioritises decarbonisation (net-zero by 2050), seafarer welfare, and maritime security, aligned with its mission for safe and sustainable shipping.
Ultimately, focus areas include global standards for new technologies, supply chain resilience, ocean governance (e.g., High Seas Treaty), and enhanced regulatory effectiveness through member state support and transparency.
